THE AFT has officially appealed a judiciary panel’s decision to let Carlton’s Cur-now brothers off with a slap on the wrists for making contact with umpires on Saturday.
Geelong’s Tom Hawkins had no doubt been feeling a little hard done by after Charlie Curnow and Ed Curnow were let off with a fine on Tuesday night.
AFT football boss Steve Hocking still had the option to appeal after the brothers were fined rather than suspended after being sent directly to the tribunal for making intentional contact with an umpire.
Their verdicts mirrored that of Gold Coast co-captain Steven May on Monday night.
All three were charged with intentional contact with a whistleblower and successfully argued the charge down to careless contact and a $1000 fine.
The bar for intentionally touching an umpire appeared to have been set at a one-game ban a week earlier at the tribunal when Hawkins was rubbed out for the same offence.
The AFL responded to the Curnow decision by appealing the light sentence on Wednesday — just the second time league officials have demanded a different sentence from a judiciary hearing.
The appeal board hearing will be heard on Thursday before the Blues name their team to take on Melbourne on Sunday.
